The Future is Crazy, Man

Hotel rooms on old Wild West trains? Modulars from Poland being brought to NYC for a high-rise hotel? Collapsable pods that can be used as "Pop-up" hotels? Are these the future of the hospitality industry?

Actually, these are the three concepts that made the finals in the Radical Innovation Competition held annually by The Hardy Group. But, it's safe to say we'll probably be seeing a lot more from these groups and others like them.

Finalist #1, Infinite Explorer, by SB Architects from San Francisco, is a complete hospitality concept that will use defunct rail lines that are scattered throughout the western US. Trains will be converted to boutique traveling hotels, with long stops along the routes so that travelers can view these beautiful and mostly remote locations. Guests will enjoy fine dining experiences, wellness activities, outdoor adventures and one-of-a-kind hospitality. This is a really cool concept and will be awesome if it comes to fruition. Let's just hope there aren't any modern day Jesse James' along the way!

Finalist #2, Volumetric High-Rise Modular Hotel, by Danny Forster & Architecture from NY is currently being developed in NYC. Once completed, the AC by Marriott structure will be the tallest modular hotel in the world. What's even more mind blowing is that all of the modules are being produced in Poland. Over 80%of the entire building to be exact. This includes all of the furnishing and interior components as well! What's even cooler is the unique way they're using 3D cameras and Virtual Reality headsets to monitor construction happening in a factory half the world away.

Finalist #3, Connectic, by Cooper Carry out of New York, is another modular type system, but these "pods" are designed/built to be collapsible, flexible and adaptable to a variety of different environments. CC sees this concept as being able to be used as pop-up hotels in remote areas, or used as a solution to overpopulated and dense areas within urban centers.
